Youth Defense
The Juvenile Justice System is distinct from the adult system in both its approach and goals. Kiyomi and Nichole have extensive training in responding to the needs of young women and men including: therapeutic crisis prevention & intervention, social-emotional learning, trauma informed practices, child development, secondary education, and restorative practices.
Nichole spent more than 5 years specializing in representing youth against criminal charges. Defending young clients has required her to develop a deep expertise in several critical areas to provide effective representation. She’s had to gain a thorough understanding of adolescent brain development to grasp how cognitive and emotional maturation influences behavior. Additionally, navigating the complexities of the Department of Human Services, exploring various placement options, and understanding treatment alternatives are essential for addressing each child's unique situation. She has had to be well-versed in the differences in treatment approaches and their impact on recidivism, as well as the factors that can affect a young person’s ability to succeed. This comprehensive knowledge ensures that she can advocate for the most appropriate and beneficial outcomes for her clients.
